On Xbox Series X|S

  1. Pre-order from the Microsoft Store on the profile you will play on.
  2. Check your payment method. Microsoft usually charges cards about 10 days before release, and a pre-order can be cancelled if a second charge attempt fails.
  3. Clear up to 212 GB. Check under Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices.
  4. Choose where it installs: Settings > System > Storage devices > Change install locations. Pick the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card, because the game cannot run from a USB drive.
  5. Turn on automatic updates under Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates. Rockstar says these must be on.
  6. Set Sleep mode under Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options, and leave the console on or asleep.
  7. To see progress, go to My games & apps > See all > Manage > Queue.

If the game does not show in My games & apps, Microsoft says to find it in the Store and select Install. If you see a price instead of Install, do not buy it again; check your order history first.
